The Puppet Theatre on water: folk immersion

In this famous theatre on the banks of the Lake of the Restored Sword, puppets and carved wood dragons bring regional legends to life.

The stage looks like a pond from which lacquered wooden dolls emerge. Submerged in water up to the waist and hidden behind a screen, puppeteers manipulate figures using long bamboo rods. The grandiose show is accompanied by a traditional orchestra that sits on the side of the stage. The explosions of firecrackers herald key moments in these enchanted stories in which characters appear or disappear like magic.

The show unfolds as a series of tableaux, evoking both legends and scenes of everyday life that explain the origins of a phenomenon. The Thang Long Theatre at the Lake of the Restored Sword right at the entrance to the Old Quarter is one of the best places to discover this authentic art. Originally created by peasants in the Red River region, this spectacle, whose ancestral traditions date back to the 11th century, is one of the major art forms of Vietnam.
